Babar Azam has been selected as the deputy to Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed for the upcoming Sri Lanka series. Sri Lanka is expected to tour Pakistan to play three ODIs and as many T20Is between September 27 and October 9. This is the first time the world number one ranked T20I batsman has been elevated to the post of vice-captaincy. Babar was earlier confirmed as the captain for Central Punjab’s First XI side in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.
This appointment is thus a gradual pathway towards grooming Babar as the future leader of Pakistan cricket team.
“We have appointed Babar Azam as Sarfaraz’s vice-captain. This is part of Babar’s gradual development as a future captain and in line with our strategy of introducing a succession plan across the board so that there are no gaps,” PCB chairman Ehsan Mani said.
