Hurricanes triumph over Strikers in a last over thriller

Hobart Hurricanes defeated Adelaide Strikers by seven runs in a last over thriller at their home on Thursday.

Opting to bat first, the George Bailey-led Hurricanes scored 183 for 5 thanks to D’Acry Short’s 58-ball 96 - 27-year-old’s second 90-plus score on trot - with nine 4s and four 6s.

Hurricanes were off to a flying start as the opening pair of Alex Doolan and Short struck a 60-run partnership in 8.1 over before the former fell to young Afghan prodigy Rashid Khan.

Rashid and pacer Billy Stanlake were the only bowlers to strike for Strikers. Both bagged two wickets apiece.

In their reply, Strikers lost their both openers early in the piece. Alex Carey and Jake Weatherman fell in five balls to leave their side reeling at 10 for 2 inside three overs.

But a rearguard effort by Travis Head (44 off 32) and Colin Ingram (66 off 44) kept Strikers’ chase alive.

A 102-run partnership between the two for the third-wicket ended with Head’s wicket in the 14th over.

Sizeable contributions by JS Wells and JW Lehmann in the lower-order with 28 and 16 kept the innings momentum.

The match came down to 13 required off the final over that Jofra Archer defended with success. Strikers lost their two batsmen on the first two balls and eventually lost the match.
