Angelo Mathews returns to Sri Lanka squad for England Tests

Angelo Mathews is all set for a Test comeback in the upcoming two-match series against England after being ruled out of the South Africa tour due to a hamstring injury.

The former Sri Lanka captain had sustained the injury during the inaugural Lanka Premier League where he captained Colombo Kings to the top of the points table, though his side endured a defeat to Galle Gladiators in the semi-final.

Mathews has been included in the 22-man squad named for the England series, which was postponed in March 2020 owing to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. Both matches will be staged in Galle behind closed doors with the first game scheduled to begin on Thursday.

Sri Lanka were overcome with a flurry of fitness woes during their two humbling defeats in South Africa and will be welcoming back the services of Dinesh Chandimal, Suranga Lakmal and Lahiru Kumara.

The hosts have called up Nuwan Pradeep, Roshen Silva, Lakshan Sandakan and the uncapped Ramesh Mendis to boost the squad's depth.

Dhananjaya de Silva, Kasun Rajitha, Santhush Gunathilake and Dilshan Madushanka have been excluded from the England series with the former two suffering injury blows in the South Africa tour.

Questions persist over the availability of batsman Oshada Fernando for the first Test as he hasn't had sufficient practice to prepare for the series.
