Mohammad Rizwan confirmed as Pakistan Test vice-captain

Mohammad Rizwan has been appointed vice-captain of Pakistan's Test side with his first assignment in the new role set to be the upcoming tour of New Zealand.

Rizwan will be the second-in-command to Babar Azam, who was confirmed Pakistan's all-format captain on Tuesday.

Rizwan has established himself as Pakistan's first-choice wicketkeeper, particularly in the longest format, over the past year following the removal of former skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed from the team.

Although Rizwan made his Test debut in 2016, he failed to get enough chances at the highest level until the sacking of Sarfaraz from the captaincy job.

Subsequently, Rizwan struck a couple of feisty knocks during the Australia tour last year including an impressive 95 at The Gabba.

He also featured in Pakistan's victories amidst a successful home season, which marked the return of Test cricket in the country after a gap of 10 years.

The highlight of Rizwan's short Test career was Pakistan's trip to England, where the 28-year-old was declared the visitors' player of the series.

Rizwan's exceptional glovework and a spate of defiant innings stood out as he won accolades for his memorable performances despite Pakistan facing a 1-0 series defeat. He hit two half-centuries and averaged 40.25 across the four innings he batted.

Rizwan further showcased his brilliance during the domestic National T20 Cup, captaining Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to a title-winning campaign. He was the fourth-leading run-getter in the tournament with a high score of 99 not out as he often opened the innings for his team.

The triumphant leadership stint propelled Rizwan to the captaincy radar with the wicketkeeper being considered to replace Azhar Ali as Pakistan's Test skipper.

The Boxing Day Test between Pakistan and New Zealand at Mount Maunganui will see the tourists step onto the field with a new leadership group comprising of Babar and Rizwan.
