Dinesh Karthik relinquishes KKR captaincy; Eoin Morgan takes over for rest of IPL 2020
Dinesh Karthik has stepped down as leader of the Kolkata Knight Riders with World Cup-winning skipper Eoin Morgan assuming the captaincy responsibilities for the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise for the remainder of the season.
The two-time IPL winners are currently ranked fourth on the points table with four victories and three defeats under their belt.
Karthik, in particular, has struggled for fluency throughout the competition as he has managed a paltry sum of 108 runs in seven innings. The veteran wicketkeeper-batsman has informed the team management that he has opted to relieve leadership duties in order to focus on his batting.
“We are fortunate to have leaders such as DK, who has always put the team first. It takes a lot of courage for someone like him to take a decision such as this. While we were surprised by his decision, we are respectful of his wishes," said KKR CEO Venky Mysore.
Morgan's first assignment in charge of KKR will be the IPL encounter against defending champions Mumbai Indians on Friday in Abu Dhabi. The experienced southpaw was added in the side after being acquired by KKR at the IPL auction last year.
"We are also fortunate that Eoin Morgan, the 2019 World Cup-winning captain, who has been the vice-captain, is willing to lead the side going forward," Mysore added.
"DK and Eoin have worked brilliantly together during this tournament and although Eoin takes over as captain, this is effectively a role swap and we expect that this transition will work in a seamless manner."
Morgan has scored 175 runs in the tournament so far at a healthy average of 35 as he has often batted down the order for Kolkata.
