Ali Khan likely to replace injured Harry Gurney for Kolkata Knight Riders
Kolkata Knight Riders are expected to rope in Ali Khan as a like-for-like replacement for injured English seamer Harry Gurney, according to an ESPNcricinfo report.
Gurney had pulled out of the Indian Premier League due to a severe shoulder injury that required surgery. The Nottinghamshire quick was forced to miss this year's Vitality Blast as well.
Khan's inclusion in the upcoming tournament will make him the first player from the USA to play in the IPL. Current USA fast bowler Rusty Theron has previously had IPL stints with Kings XI Punjab, Deccan Chargers and Rajasthan Royals but he was then associated with South Africa.
Khan is a part of the invincible Trinbago Knight Riders outfit - the Caribbean Premier League franchise with the same parent company as KKR. He was an integral member of TKR's title-winning campaign where Kieron Pollard-led team spent the entire season unbeaten.
Over the years, Khan has established himself as a T20 mercenary with his canny ability to consistently clock speeds in excess of 140 kph.
The 29-year-old, who was born and raised in Pakistan before moving to the USA at the age of 18, has the experience of playing in Global T20 Canada, Pakistan Super League, Bangladesh Premier League, Afghanistan Premier League and the T10 League.
He has registered a total of 38 wickets in 36 T20 matches with a solitary ODI appearance for the USA against Papua New Guinea in 2019.
Among the star-studded overseas contingent for KKR, they already have the pace bowling options of Pat Cummins and Lockie Ferguson with Khan now adding depth to their intimidating line-up.
KKR last won the league in 2014 and are still in search of their maiden title under the leadership of senior wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik.
