Former Test spinner Nadeem Khan has been confirmed as PCB’s Director - High Performance, it was announced in a press release on Wednesday (May 13).

Following his recruitment, he has resigned from his post of selection committee coordinator of the senior men’s cricket team. His replacement will be announced in due course.

According to the media release, a total of 16 candidates had applied for the post and were interviewed by Iqbal Qasim (Chairman, Cricket Committee), Wasim Akram (Member, Cricket Committee), David Parsons (Ex-Performance Director – ECB) and Wasim Khan (Chief Executive, PCB).

The slot for Director - High Performance was created as the PCB eye a revamp of the National Cricket Academy and its domestic cricket affairs. Former Pakistan cricketer, Mudassar Nazar, who has been serving as Director Academies, decided against seeking an extension to his contract last year which ends on May 31, 2020.

On the other hand, Haroon Rasheed, Director Domestic Cricket Operations, will also depart from the PCB as his contract ends on the same date (May 31). The role for Nadeem will encircle both Director Academies and Domestic Cricket affairs. According to the PCB, this will serve the game and its cricketers in a ‘smoother way’.

The 50-year-old, who played for Pakistan in two Tests and two ODIs, has been instrumental in setting up the Moin Khan Cricket Academy. He has played a key role in reviving the UBL Sports Academy and empowering it into a successful and self-sustaining financial proposition.

The UBL cricket team, under Nadeem’s tutelage, reached the final of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy in 2015-16 and won the Inter-Departmental One-Day Cup in 2017-18. It was also in Nadeem’s tenure that four players from the UBL graduated to Pakistan men’s senior side and five featured in various pathway squads.

On his appointment, Nadeem Khan said: “I am delighted to join the Pakistan Cricket Board at an exciting time when major reforms are taking place at all levels that are aimed at embracing international practices in an effort to enhance the overall standard of our cricket.

“Having previous experience in delivering performance systems and a tournament-winning side, I am looking forward to the challenges, competitive opportunities, and overseeing the development of the PCB High Performance Programme.

“One of my key objectives will be to identify the assets at a young stage through the High Performance Centres and then monitor their growth, development and progression through our domestic programmes. I have some big shoes to fill but I am looking forward to making a significant and meaningful contribution during my time with the PCB.”

The PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan said Nadeem brings in a tremendous cricketing knowledge as the board aims to fill in the gap between domestic and international cricket.

“I want to welcome Nadeem Khan to the PCB family. He brings with him tremendous respect, integrity and a huge amount of cricket knowledge. Nadeem’s understanding of all aspects of player pathways, domestic cricket and high performance systems will be vital as we aim to bridge the gap between domestic and international cricket through the new direction we are taking.

“Director – High Performance is a critical role in the PCB’s Strategic Plan and Nadeem has demonstrated over the past three decades that he is the best candidate to help us achieve our objective of supporting a merit-based, quality focused first-class cricket and high-performance system.”
