Side strain rules Wood out of Sri Lanka tour

Side strain has ruled Mark Wood out of England’s tour of Sri Lanka starting next month. Lancashire quick Saqib Mehmood has been announced as his replacement.

Wood picked up an injury at the end of South Africa, as he was selected for the three-match T20I series.

In an official statement by the England and Wales Cricket Board, Wood’s scans revealed a ‘small tear to his left side’. He will now go through an injury rehabilitation programme with England and Durham medical panels.

Wood had missed the Ashes summer with a knee problem and made a comeback to Test cricket in South Africa after a gap of almost a year.

Keaton Jennings and Ben Foakes were both recalled to the squad, while the selectors also decided to persist with Jos Buttler and Joe Denly.

Jonny Bairstow was left out of the squad over poor run of form in Test cricket while James Anderson has been left out in order to allow him to make full recovery from an injury sustained during the South Africa tour.

Moeen Ali remains absent from the squad as he had made himself unavailable for selection in Test cricket.
