'It’s not about egos' - Boucher gives nod to De Villiers' imminent return to Proteas squad

South Africa head coach Mark Boucher has hinted at AB de Villiers' inclusion in the team ahead of the T20 World Cup later this year.

De Villiers stepped away from international cricket in May 2018 but has been active on the global T20 circuit with his form rarely taking a hit.

He was one of the top run-scorers in the Mzansi Super League last year and followed it up with a couple of blazing innings in the Big Bash League for Brisbane Heat, even resuming wicketkeeping duties in two matches.

With the Proteas failing to succeed in the three-match T20I series against England, calls for de Villiers' international comeback have started to gain traction.

Dismissing all talk of fractious relations between de Villiers and the team management, Boucher emphasized that he had no qualms selecting the star batter if he proves his willingness to don the national jersey.

“He’s a discussion in the media and the public. There’s no discussion from my side. I have had chats with him, we’ll probably learn pretty soon what’s going to happen with AB," Boucher said in the aftermath of South Africa's defeat to England at Centurion.

"As I said from day one when I took over, if we’re going to a World Cup I’d like to have our [best] players.”

“If AB is in good form and he is raring to go, and makes himself available for the time we have asked him to be available; if he is the best man for the job, then he must go. It’s not about egos, it’s about sending the best team to the World Cup to try and win the competition.”

This is not the first time de Villiers has been tied to a potential return to South Africa's squad since he had earlier offered to play the ICC World Cup in England and Wales but his suggestion was shunned.

It is pertinent to note that despite Boucher's eagerness, de Villiers was not considered for selection in the upcoming three-match T20I series against Australia at home.
