Salt, Rashid help Strikers inflict 18-run win over Renegades

Ball-by-ball details & scorecard: Melbourne Renegades vs Adelaide Strikers, Match 15, Melbourne (Docklands)

Phil Salt, Alex Carey and Rashid Khan powered Adelaide Strikers to the top of points table as the visiting side edged Melbourne Renegades by 18 runs.

Batting first, Strikers posted 155 for the loss of six wickets. Sussex batsman Phil Salt smashed a 26-ball 54 to set the tone for his side. His knock included five fours and a maximum.

Alex Carey then took the charge in the middle overs with an adept 41 off 37 balls. Jonathan Wells couldn’t quite get along (20 off 24) but Afghan leg-spinner Rashid Khan provided the much-needed impetus lower down the order with a flamboyant 25 off 16 balls.

With 156 set to win, Renegades lost Sam Harper early in the peace, nicking off to Wes Agar. Skipper Aaron Finch provided some fight from the top-order as Strikers kept chipping along with wickets at regular intervals.

Rashid Khan returned with figures of 2 for 15 and almost had a third one when he trapped Webster in-front. The on-field umpire had started lifting his index finger but backed out at the last moment as he pretended to scratch his nose instead.

The leggie also inflicted a run-out of Aaron Finch, catching him just short of his ground at the non-striker’s end. He made 50 off 39 balls.

Wes Agar (2/20) and all-rounder Cameron Valente (2/36) bowled tightly to keep the opposition under check in the final overs of the game.

Peter Siddle, who had announced his international retirement, returned with 32 runs in his quota of four overs. The Renegades were left stranded at 137 for 8 by the end of 20 overs as Beau Webster remained stranded at 36 off 26 balls.

Rashid Khan was declared player of the match for his all-round performance,
