Abid Ali, Sami Aslam headline Quaid-e-Azam Trophy opening round with double tons

The first round of the revamped Quaid-e-Azam Trophy proved to be a batting-friendly affair as all three games ended in a draw.

Batsmen continued to pile heaps of runs across the three four-day fixtures with bowlers having to toil hard for wickets.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa managed to take the lead in the six-team table after securing bonus points for racking up a total in excess of 400 in 110 overs and getting bowling points for dismissing the opposition quickly.

Meanwhile, Balochistan are placed on the bottom of the points table after holding onto a draw with Sindh.

Imam-ul-Haq top-scored with 152 as Balochistan finished at 355-9 on the final day of the clash against Sindh at the UBL Sports Complex in Karachi.

Late-order resistance from Khurram Shehzad ensured the away side avoided being all out in reply to Sindh's mammoth total of 473-5 declared.

He contributed with an unbeaten 68-ball 44 featuring six fours and two sixes while Mir Hamza and Sindh vice-captain Asad Shafiq claimed three wickets each.

Earlier in the game, Abid Ali struck a fine double ton putting on 212 runs for the first wicket with centurion Khurram Manzoor.

Abid's sublime 712-minute stay at the crease was adorned by 26 boundaries as he remained not out at the career-best score of 249 by the end of the innings.

Sindh received five points for the drawn match and an additional three batting points for scoring more than 300 runs in 110 overs and a single point for taking four wickets inside 110 overs.

Balochistan collected five points for the drawn game, one point for scoring more than 200 runs in 110 overs and one point for taking three wickets inside 110 overs.

Central Punjab vs Southern Punjab

Sami Aslam, leading run-scorer at the conclusion of the opening round, struck 50 not out on the last day of the Punjab Derby as Southern Punjab finished with 107-1 in the drawn game.

Sami carried his bat for a career-best 243 in his side's first innings as Southern Punjab posted a massive total of 467 all out.

He was supported by centurion Adnan Akmal and Aamer Yamin's aggressive 67-ball 64 during his marathon innings.

In reply, the Babar Azam-led Central Punjab were lifted by a spate of fifties from their top-order batsmen, allowing them to achieve 473 runs on the board.

Azhar Ali, Ahmed Shehzad, Umar Akmal, Mohammad Saad and Faheem Ashraf all scored half-centuries with Umar top-scoring with 89 off 118 deliveries.

Southern Punjab spinner Mohammad Irfan was the pick of the bowlers on a slow Gaddafi Stadium pitch with four wickets for 120 runs.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa vs Northern

Northern accomplished a draw in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the back of blistering centuries from Mohammad Nawaz and Asif Ali.

Following on in their second innings, Northern managed to erase the 264-run deficit as they finished with 433-6 on the fourth day.

Asif, often deemed as a white-ball specialist, smashed 114 in 133 balls with the help of 18 boundaries and three sixes.

KP's charge in the first innings was driven by skipper Mohammad Rizwan's 176 and Ashfaq Ahmed's 106 as they made 526-9 declared.

Northern were bundled out for 262 in reply with first-class debutant Haider Ali top-scoring with 99.

KP bagged a total of 15 points with Northern getting only two bonus points for scoring 250+ in 110 overs and one bowling point for taking four wickets within 110 overs.
