Umar Akmal, Wahab Riaz notable omissions as Pakistan announce World Cup probables

Pakistan's national selection committee, after consultation with head coach Mickey Arthur, has called up 23 World Cup probables for a fitness test to be held at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore on 15 and 16 April, a PCB media release said Thursday.

The list includes the limited-over mainstays as well as some recent debutants (Abid Ali, Shan Masood and Mohammad Hasnain) who played against Australia in the 5-0 series loss.

Mohammad Hafeez, who underwent two surgeries on his thumb injured during the PSL and is racing against the time to gain full fitness, has also been named in the list.

The list also includes the names of Mohammad Amir and Yasir Shah. Amir's ODI form in recent times has been a worry for Pakistan. He was dropped from the side after the first ODI against Australia in the recently concluded series. Since the 2017 Champions Trophy final, Amir averages over 92 with just five wickets to his name. Yasir is another name who has returned underwhelming performances with the white ball. He played all five ODI against Australia and claimed four wickets at an average of 70.75.

The release also added that the selection committee will announce the squad for the World Cup on 18 April in Lahore.

The notable omissions from the probables list include Umar Akmal and Wahab Riaz. Akmal had failed to impress the selectors in the five-match series against Australia but has smashed 136* and 99 in the two games of the ongoing Pakistan Cup. Riaz, who has not played an ODI since Pakistan's first game against India during the 2017 Champions Trophy, also missed out despite being the third-highest wicket-taker during the 2019 PSL with 17 scalps. He also took a five-for during the ongoing Pakistan Cup where he is representing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Probables for 2019 ODI World Cup squad:

Sarfaraz Ahmed (c), Abid Ali, Asif Ali, Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Sohail, Hasan Ali, Imad Wasim, Imam-ul-Haq, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shan Masood, Shoaib Malik, Usman Shinwari, Yasir Shah

The Pakistan cricket team will depart for England on 23 April where they will play England in five ODIs and a T20I as well a series of practice and international matches before entering the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 against the Windies on 31 May at Trent Bridge.
