Maxwell, bowlers decimate Sixers as Stars cruise to semi-finals

Ball-by-ball details & scorecard: Melbourne Stars v Sydney Sixers - Match 56 - Melbourne

The Sydney Sixers were handed a 94-run defeat by the Melbourne Stars in the final match of the regular fixtures of the Big Bash League.

Sydney Sixers captain Moises Henriques won the bat flip and sent the Stars into bat.

The home side started aggressively, with Marcus Stoinis taking 16 runs from Lloyd Pope's opening over.

Stoinis and Handscomb both got good starts and reached 34 and 35 respectively before both were caught in the infield looking to find the boundary.

The Sixers fought back well through the crucial middle overs, with Steve O'Keefe, Sean Abbott and Tom Curran dramatically slowing down the home side's scoring.

Stars were able to smash 77 runs from the last five overs, thanks to some blistering hitting from Glenn Maxwell (82 off 43). His side finished with an imposing 168 from 20 overs, which then transferred the pressure back to the opposition.

The Sixers, needing only 107 runs to maintain a better net run rate than the Renegades and secure second place on the BBL table, lost wickets at regular intervals throughout their innings.

But they were never in the run chase as they kept on losing wickets on regular intervals. The spin duo of Sandeep Lamichhane and Adam Zampa shared five wickets between themselves as Sixers were bowled out for 74.

Sixers secured third place on the points table and will now play the Renegades on Friday for a spot in the Big Bash League finals.
