Misbah leaves United, enters draft for next PSL edition
Former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq has left two-time winners Islamabad United and will be available for selection in the draft which will take place on November 20.
Islamabad United announced Misbah’s departure in a press release.
“In the weeks leading up to the draft Islamabad United had reached an agreement with Misbah-ul-Haq regarding his appointment as mentor of the franchise for PSL 4 and the editions going forward. This is in line with ISLU’s ethos of developing and nurturing not only emerging players but also senior players as they move to the next phase of their careers. ISLU was hence delighted to receive the written confirmation to this affect.
“Despite having reached that agreement the franchise was informed yesterday that Misbah wished to stay in the Player Draft for PSL 4 for consideration as an active player. As Islamabad United had already announced its retentions and has a specific strategy for the Draft, picking Misbah as a player may not be possible for the franchise,” the press release said.
Sources close to the player indicate he will be available for selection as ‘Player Mentor’ and is upbeat to provide his services as an active player where needed by his potential franchise.
He was initially part of the ‘Platinum Category’ and will be relegated to the ‘Diamond Category’ after making himself available as a mentor. Karachi Kings and Quetta Gladiators have used up their picks in that category, while Islamabad United have decided against retaining the league’s most successful captain.
The 44-year-old was appointed to the Pakistan Cricket Board’s cricket committee not too long ago and plans to focus on administrative roles or a career in the media once his playing days are over.
